Counseling for men
ASSIST provides counseling and therapies for men in Johnson, Bartholomew, Shelby, and Morgan Counties.
Men of all ages get counseling for countless reasons. And they include leaders, businessmen, detectives, police officers, firefighters, professionals, and all manner of hard workers, neighbors, and colleagues.
Counseling is done on your terms and provided at no cost to men who have experienced abuse, trauma, sexual assault, or witnessed a crime.
Half of all child forensic interviews at ASSIST are for boys
ASSIST’s Child Advocacy Center follows the same model for boys as it does for girls, all backed by evidence, privacy, and best practices. About half of all the child abuse and sexual assault cases at our CAC serve boys under 18, a number that is similar at most every other CAC in Indiana.
The CAC is here to provide age-appropriate services to ensure abuse stops and healing can begin. Young boys and teens who come to ASSIST are entitled to:
- An Advocate
- Counseling
- Medical care
- A thorough forensic interview that aids prosecution, and
- Justice
Forensic medical exams for men
Forensic medical exams can help aid prosecution and supply evidence to end abuse and sexual assault. Men, like everyone, have the right to an exam and the right to decline some or all of the process.
The process is discreet, private, and done with the same level of care as any medical exam or process.
FAQs about trauma and counseling services for men
ASSIST serves people who have experienced intense trauma. So marriage counseling, psychotherapy, psychiatric care, and advanced or unusually severe depression or other needs are best served with more specialized care.
It varies and depends on the cases. Children, for instance, may need a different level of care than adult men. We don’t prescribe minimums or maximums. Some people come to ASSIST for two or three sessions. Some come for years. You’re in control.
EMDR, RRT, sand therapy, and even music therapy are available to men. ASSIST also hosts a rotating schedule of support groups — some of which are gendered — throughout the year. For a lot of men, simply speaking to a counselor is the right kind of therapy for them.
