STIs and STDs can be spread without sexual contact, too
Despite their name, sexually transmitted infections and diseases can be spread without any sexual contact.
- HPV can be spread with skin-to-skin contact, such as touching a wart or a mother-to-infant during birth
- Herpes can spread through cold sores or touching contaminated objects, like cups
- Hepatitis B and C and HIV can spread through contact with blood, injections, or mother-to-child
- Syphilis can spread by from lesions or chancre sores
Other infections and diseases like pubic lice (crabs), yeast infections from hormonal shifts, and others can spread from contact in public showers, gyms, improperly cleaned items like towels, or airborne bacterial infections.

When to know to get tested for STIs and STDs
If you experience one or more of the following symptoms, you may need to get tested to prevent worsening problems or health issues:
- Sores around your mouth, face, or public region
- Persistent fevers not associated with a cold, flu, or COVID
- You’ve had unprotected sex in the past few weeks
- Vaginal or eye discharge, including odors
- Burning or irritation while urinating or defecating
