Providing Johnson, Shelby, Brown, Bartholomew, and Morgan County vital prevention education curriculum
Indiana law requires all public, private, and charter schools to provide age-appropriate prevention education.
Prevention education empowers kids with a vocabulary to come forward to a safe, trusted adult and put an end to abuse. It also helps adults know how to respond to a child who may be at risk.
We’re here to ASSIST Johnson County schools, adults, and youth groups with several options.
Evidence-based abuse prevention education ready-made for area classrooms
ASSIST Indiana partners with the Monique Burr Foundation to provide evidence-based abuse prevention curricula and materials to classrooms. These ready-made sheets, guides, and steps comply with Indiana law and are age-appropriate for elementary, middle, and high school students.
ASSIST prevention educators come to your classroom and speak to students in language that makes sense for them about the risks, signs, and common questions that come up about body safety.
The entire program is 2-hours and can be delivered in convenient increments:
- Four 30-minute sessions, or
- Two 55-minute sessions, or
- One 2-hour session
This turnkey presentation includes opt-in/out forms, pre- and post-session exams, and all handouts and materials.
Two child abuse prevention options for schools and youth groups
After these sessions, kids have a better understanding of neglect, sexual assault, who are trusted adults, and how to come forward if someone is hurting them.
These sessions are provided at-cost to schools and are covered by available grants or other funding sources.
- For elementary students, grades 1-5
- Discusses safe adults and red flags
- Covers cyberbullying
- Covers digital abuse in an age-appropriate way
- Helps students make informed reports
- For middle and high school students, grades 6-12
- Covers cyberbullying
- Covers digital abuse, safety, and self-awareness
- Covers physical and emotional abuse
- Discusses sexual abuse, trafficking, and assault
Child abuse prevention education presentations and trainings for adults
Churches, youth groups, and other child and teen-focused organizations in Johnson County and surrounding counties can request group prevention education presentations. These sessions typically last about 2.5 hours and are designed for adults, using materials from Darkness 2 Light.
During adult abuse prevention training sessions, ASSIST’s prevention educators talk to participants about:
- How to spot signs of abuse
- What to do if a child makes an outcry
- How to make an informed report to aid law enforcement and the child, and
- How to speak with the child
These sessions are provided at a low or no-cost, depending on the availability of grants or other funding sources.

FAQs about child abuse prevention education
Schools and youth groups such as churches, Scouts, and other clubs can request an abuse prevention session for kids and teens as young as kindergarten.
Adults in community groups, service clubs, and even employers can also request adult-oriented prevention sessions.
ASSIST serves Johnson, Brown, Bartholomew, Shelby, and Morgan Counties.

Adult sessions are 2.5 hours. They make for excellent “Lunch and Learn” style opportunities for employers.
All programs can be delivered virtually, though we strongly recommend in-person sessions.
Prevention sessions for kids as part of a school-based training include all the worksheets and handouts. Opt-in/out letters are also provided, as well as pre-session and post-session tests to measure outcomes.
Adult training sessions through Darkness 2 Light include materials at no extra cost. Some groups do like to cover costs for drinks, snacks, or other refreshments.
