What the “Leave this site” link does
When you choose Leave this site, your browser goes to Google right away. It’s meant for the moment someone walks into the room and you don’t want them to see this page. That is all it does.
What it can’t do
It does not erase where you have been. Your browser still remembers:
- The pages you visited, in your history
- Addresses you typed, which may fill in on their own next time
- Open tabs on your phone, which can show up on a shared laptop or tablet signed in to the same account
- Anything a monitoring app installed on the device can record
Clearing your history helps a little, but a history that is suddenly empty can draw attention too. If you think someone is watching what you do, the safest choice is to use a different device.
Safer ways to look and to reach out
- Use a device the other person can’t get to. A friend’s phone, a computer at a public library, or a computer at work or school.
- Use a private or incognito window. It keeps pages out of the history on that device. It does not hide anything from monitoring software.
- Call instead of typing. Call 317-739-4456 and press option 2. That is ASSIST’s main number and our crisis line. It’s free, confidential, and answered 24 hours a day. Calls show up in a phone’s call log, so use a phone the other person doesn’t check.
- Come see us. ASSIST is at 198 E Jefferson St in Franklin. We are a designated Safe Place for Johnson and Morgan counties.
- Call 911 if you are in danger right now.
When you contact us through this website
Messages sent through our contact form go to ASSIST staff. The form itself doesn’t leave a copy in your email, but the page you filled out will still be in your browser history. If you would rather not leave any written record on your device, call us instead.
Other places to call
- National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-7233, or text START to 88788. Open 24 hours a day.
- Turning Point 24-hour helpline: 800-221-6311. Emergency shelter for Johnson, Bartholomew, Brown, Shelby, and nearby counties.
- Indiana 211: call 211 or text your ZIP code to 898-211 for food, housing, and other help near you. We also keep a list of places nearby that help with housing and bills.
Hiding the message at the top of the site
If you don’t need the safety message, choose Hide. It stays hidden in that browser until you clear the browser’s site data. You can always come back to this page from the bottom of the site.
