Individual, personal counseling and therapies in Johnson and surrounding counties

Everyone in our community deserves a safe, inclusive space for healing, access to important services, and a place to find hope. Individual therapies and one-on-one counseling is a critical part of your mental health and our community’s wellbeing.

ASSIST is not a medical provider and can not prescribe medications, nor is ASSIST a psychiatric provider. But we can provide counseling for victims and witnesses to violence and violent crimes.

Free counseling and therapies from our Franklin office

Like all our services at ASSIST, counseling is provided for free to people who have experienced or witnessed violence, crime, and personal trauma. This includes evidence-based:

  • Counseling for rape survivors
  • Therapy for child victims of crime, neglect, sexual assault, or witnesses to violent crime
  • Human trafficking recovery and support
  • Domestic violence counseling
  • Support for those suffering severe emotional neglect and abuse

There are several therapies available to ASSIST patients

Everyone is unique. So should your therapy and counseling. After an initial intake assessment, we work with patrons to use what everyone agrees is best for them. ASSIST counselors have specialized training in a range of effective modalities tailored specifically for addressing trauma.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing

Kids and adults can benefit from EMDR, where a combined focus on a traumatic memory and eye movements or sound allows safe processing of trauma and replaces it with positive memories.

You repeat this process until the event feels less traumatic.

FAQs about ASSIST’s counseling and therapy options

Are there group therapy options?

Yes! ASSIST offers different support groups at varying times. Check out currently available group therapy options.

What sort of people does ASSIST not serve?

We will do our best to help connect anyone who comes to us with the right provider when we’re not the best option. Some combat veterans in need of select services, those requesting marriage counseling, and individuals seeking therapy not connected with trauma or violence may not find ASSIST the best provider for their needs.

Can ASSIST counselors prescribe medications or provide a medical diagnosis?

Yes. While ASSIST therapists are not clinicians and cannot write prescriptions, additional ASSIST staff are licensed to write prescriptions. Talk with your counselor for details. Some prescriptions may require follow up with other physicians or we’ll talk with your doctor to help facilitate medical treatment or a higher level of care.

Are there specialized groups you work with?

ASSIST works closely with law enforcement, EMTs, and firefighters in Johnson, Bartholomew, Brown, Shelby, and Morgan counties.

What if I find therapy or treatment isn’t for me?

All ASSIST services are optional, and we can explore possible alternatives. Barring a court order, you don’t have to continue with treatments, counseling, or therapies you don’t want to.

How long are sessions, and how many should I plan for?

Everyone is unique, so we don’t prescribe a specific length of time. Some people only need a few sessions, some people need many years. Each individual session by itself is 50 minutes.
