Whether you need help finding emergency shelter after leaving an abusive situation, help navigating the court system, or just to have someone at your side to talk to, Advocates are here at no cost through ASSIST.

Advocates know where to turn so you don’t have to

Everyone who comes to ASSIST is entitled to an Advocate who can:

Help you find other services in the area, like shelter, food, clothing, transportation, or meeting other basic needs
Connect you with law enforcement and prosecutors, if and when you’re ready as required by law
Help you file for protective orders or other judicial proceedings against a threat
Support ways to support your kids and families
Find and refer you to specialized or advanced medical or mental health care in the area
Be with you, if you wish, during forensic medical exams

Is there a time limit for speaking with an advocate?

No, anyone who comes to ASSIST for any of our trauma support services can speak with an advocate at any time while they’re here or even years after.

How much does Advocacy cost?

Advocates are here to help and navigate to what’s best for you at no cost to you.

Is Advocacy a medical expense or service?

No, but Advocates can help you find advanced medical or mental health care beyond what ASSIST offers, if necessary, such as psychiatric care or care that requires prescriptions. Advocates can also help you understand what options may be available for medical insurance coverage.

Do I have to talk to an Advocate if I don’t want to?

No, you don’t. People served at ASSIST have the right to decline, ask, or change their mind about speaking with an Advocate at any time. As the name suggests, they’re here to advocate for your interests and needs as allowed by law.
